The Left Can’t Meme

This is the true story of how one side lost its ability to laugh and the other side won the culture. Since 2016, the Left has struggled to be funny. Comedy that once skewered power while connecting with everyday Americans has become sanitized, moralizing, and politically correct, while the Right discovered memes, absurdity, and irony as cultural weapons. Americans are laughing at conservatives and groaning at progressives -- and that gap is the story of our cultural moment. In her highly anticipated debut book, popular cultural commentator and comedian Bridget Phetasy shows how humor has become the most powerful force in modern politics. The Left Can’t Meme takes readers from the heyday of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to the rise of internet meme culture. Using TV, film, and social media examples, Phetasy shows how ideological purity, cancel culture, and political correctness reshaped humor -- and why the Left lost the joke. Drawing on her personal experience in the comedy scene, she blends history, analysis, and irreverent wit to explain why humor is power. Phetasy is uniquely positioned to write this book. A comedian and podcaster, she has spent years dissecting the absurdities of our polarized world. The Left Can’t Meme appeals to readers who enjoy bold, funny cultural criticism with history, personal insight, and internet-savvy commentary.
