The Long Silence

The transfer apparatus at Svalbard has been dead for eighteen months when twenty-eight-year-old researcher Erika Magnusdóttir records a load on it. She checks the instrument, checks the building, and checks herself. Then the field rises, and Erika disappears. THE LONG SILENCE is a complete, character-driven hard science fiction audiobook about a rescue built on evidence that refuses to become certainty. The data says a crossing began and did not resolve. It cannot prove Erika is alive. It cannot honestly call her dead. Retired astronomer Maren Solberg is called back to the programme she helped create, and the old Svalbard installation begins to wake around a single question: is there still someone on the far side to bring home? Engineers, scientists and a mission crew rebuild around strict thresholds, certified margins and one promise: everyone who goes through must come home. Every safeguard is real. Every calculation is honest. The danger is the term no model knew to include. The Long Silence is a hard-SF rescue and expedition novel about engineering procedure, crew trust, institutional secrecy, duty, uncertainty, and the point where good arithmetic stops being enough. It concludes The Silence trilogy while remaining a complete novel in its own right. The close of the Silence trilogy, and the origin point of the Fracture Cosmology. New to R. S. Breed?
