Midnight Choir

In 1907 McClure's Magazine named Seattle "the wickedest city in America." And when Adrienne Cody, a young visiting nurse, agrees to find care for the secret son of Julie Moran, a high-society prostitute with friends in too many places, she runs straight into the people who made it that way. Almost immediately after leaving Julie, Adrienne witnesses the murder of a vice lord. Jack Gallagher, the detective in charge of the case, soon turns her head with his flattery and debonair ways. Only slowly does she learn that "Honey Jack" acts as enforcer for his family of corrupt Irish cops, who rule the red-light jungle by right of conquest. Nor does Jack mention that he and Julie Moran happen to be lovers. Soon Adrienne begins to suspect that Jack himself pulled the trigger. Her evidence could hang him. If, that is, the Gallaghers let her live that long. As the secret of Julie's son sparks a bloody war over control of Seattle's "Restricted District," Adrienne searches desperately for the truth, only to encounter lies on all sides. A suspense-filled historical mystery, Midnight Choir vividly recreates the time when the real-life models for Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe walked the mean streets with brass knuckles in place of shining armor, while women tried to break free of the restrictions society imposed on them. Journey back into a thrilling adventure with Adrienne Cody and Honey Jack Gallagher in this hard-boiled tale of intrigue, romance, and murder.
