Mining Impacts on the Environment in the Central African Copperbelt of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo
This book covers various areas of mining and metallurgic industries' pollution of water, food crops, ambient air and farmlands, and their related salient impacts on residents' well-being. Community inhabitants' reactions to environmental damage due to mining activities were determined through a questionnaire at village, district, provincial, and national levels. All respondents recognized that mining has caused numerous negative effects on their livelihoods including degradation of farmlands through acidification and siltation, poor quality of both surface and underground water due to deposition and leakage of toxic dust and granules, loss of forest cover and biodiversity causing physical ecosystem disturbance, and the overall population well-being, particularly children’s health. The conception to prepare and write this book arose due to a growing recognition of the pervasive and often overlooked effects of mining and metallurgic industries' pollution on community residents in the central African Copperbelt region. As environmental degradation and pollution levels continue to rise, more and more people are experiencing first-hand serious consequences on their health, well-being, food and nutrition security, and economic stability. Inhabitants have loudly cried out to political leaders, but not one has heard them. There is, therefore, a critical need to bring out attention to the disproportionate impact of pollution on marginalized communities, who often bear the brunt of environmental harm without adequate resources or support to mitigate the effects. By highlighting these disparities and amplifying the voices of those most affected, this book can help bridge the gap in awareness and understanding of the complex relationship between pollution and livelihoods in the central African Copperbelt of Zambia and the DR Congo. Moreover, with increasing global concern about climate change and environmental sustainability, there is a pressing need for comprehensive resources that provide insights into the human side of environmental issues. The book also offers insights into policy recommendations, advocacy strategies, and community-based initiatives aimed at addressing devastating environmental and ecosystem challenges in a sustainable way. This book emerged in response to this need, aiming to educate, empower, and advocate for solutions that prioritize both environmental protection and social equity in the face of growing environmental challenges.
