Coetaneo di Bartók, fu un appassionato e intelligente cultore della musica popolare ungherese, ai cui temi e alle cui melodie si rifece in molte delle sue composizioni, peraltro di gusto essenzialmente ottocentesco. Scrisse un Singspiel (perduto), musiche di scena e balletti, oltre ad alcuni poemi sinfonici e altro per orchestra e da camera.
