Compositore tedesco.La formazione e gli inizi della carriera. Il padre Joseph, era primo corno nell'orchestra del Teatro di Corte di Monaco, e abile nel suonare molti altri strumenti, soprattutto la viola. La madre, Josephine Pschorr, apparteneva a un'agiata famiglia di produttori di birra. Sin dall'infanzia S. rivelò il suo talento e cominciò a comporre, a partire dall'ingenua ma ironica Schneiderpolka (Polka del sarto, 1870) per pianoforte, pagine pianistiche, Lieder, brevi pezzi cameristici. Nell'adolescenza scrisse due sinfonie (le uniche, in tutta la sua vita), un concerto per corno, uno per violino, oltre a composizioni da camera di crescente complessità: un quartetto per archi, una sonata per violoncello e pianoforte, una per violino e pianoforte. La sua Serenade op. 7, scritta a diciassette...

Rudolf Kempe

1910, Niederpoyritz, Dresda

Direttore d'orchestra tedesco. Dal 1952 al '54 diresse l'Opera di Monaco, poi la Royal Philharmonic di Londra, e dal 1963 fu a capo dell'orchestra della Tonhalle di Zurigo. Si impose internazionalmente per il rigore delle sue interpretazioni, fra cui spiccano le incisioni dei Concerti di R. Strauss e della Messa glagolitica di Janácek.
