Fuori dagli Stati Uniti ha vissuto in Croazia (quando si chiamava ancora Yugoslavia), nella Repubblica Ceca e in Italia. Ha trascorso un anno in Romania, esperienza che gli ha ispirato un romanzo. Vive con la moglie e la figlia in Ungheria.
