Wertmüller) prima di tornare negli Stati Uniti, dove si fa conoscere con Chi protegge il testimone (1987) di R. Scott. Riceve una nomination all'Oscar per Quei bravi ragazzi (1990) di M. Scorsese, e interpreta Mato Grosso (1992) di J. McTiernan e Ritorno dal nulla (1995) di S. Kalvert.
