For decades, Western Europe prepared in secret for a war that never came. Hidden weapons caches were established. Radio networks were prepared. Men were recruited and trained to remain behind enemy lines if Soviet forces ever occupied Western Europe. In Italy, that clandestine organisation became known by one name: Gladio. Its original mission appeared straightforward. If the Soviet Union invaded, a secret resistance network would survive occupation, gather intelligence, maintain communications and support the eventual liberation of the country. But the invasion never happened. Gladio remained. And while it remained hidden, Italy entered one of the darkest periods of its post-war history — the Years of Lead. Bombings. Assassinations. Far-right and far-left terrorism. Intelligence scandals. Secret political networks. Investigations that were obstructed, misdirected or left unresolved. When Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti acknowledged the existence of Gladio in 1990, an extraordinary question emerged: What had a secret Cold War army been doing during decades of peace? Operation Gladio follows the evidence from the resistance networks of the Second World War through the creation of NATO-era stay-behind organisations, CIA and British intelligence involvement, hidden weapons caches, clandestine training, Italy's political violence, P2, Piazza Fontana, Bologna and the eventual exposure of the European stay-behind system. But this is not a conspiracy book. Bill Stewart separates documented fact from allegation, intelligence contact from operational control, and evidence from speculation. Gladio existed. Its secret infrastructure existed. Western intelligence involvement existed. The unanswered question is how far that hidden system moved beyond the wartime mission for which it had originally been created. A documentary investigation into secrecy, intelligence, political violence and the dangerous line between defending democracy and operating beyond its sight.
