Edward Lear

(Highgate, Londra, 1812 - San Remo 1888) scrittore e pittore inglese. Ultimo di ventuno figli, dovette mantenersi sin dall’adolescenza illustrando testi di botanica, zoologia e topografia, e più tardi dipingendo paesaggi. Lavorò per la Zoological Society, per il British Museum e fu insegnante di disegno della regina Vittoria. Fu per i nipotini del conte di Derby che scrisse i suoi famosi minuscoli componimenti umoristici, detti nonsense, illustrati da vignette e pubblicati a varie riprese: Il libro dei nonsensi (A book of nonsense, 1846, 1861-63); Un libro di nonsensi e altro ancora (A book of nonsense and more nonsense, 1862); Ancora nonsensi, vignette, canzoni, botanica ecc.
