Pancho

The definitive biography of American tennis legend Pancho Gonzales, whose historic back-to-back U.S. National Championships in 1948 and 1949 shattered barriers in a predominantly white sport before he went on to reign as the world’s top professional player for much of the following decade. That thunderbolt of a serve. That chip on his shoulder the size of the sport itself. A fiery, misunderstood genius. . . Pancho Gonzales may have been the greatest tennis player of all time, rising from the hard-scrabble streets of a Los Angeles immigrant barrio to rule the tennis world in an era that wasn’t ready for a working-class Mexican American champion. In Pancho: The Triumph and Tragedy of Tennis Legend Pancho Gonzales, veteran journalist and historian Tony Castro offers a deeply personal, culturally resonant portrait of one of the most complicated figures in sports history. Gonzales was not only an athletic icon but a symbol of something larger: the fierce, often invisible war waged by Latinos to claim their place in the American dream. Castro details Pancho’s youth growing up in a segregated Los Angeles where he was barred from most tennis courts because of the color of his skin and the sound of his name. With no coaching, no formal training, and no country club pedigree, he became world champion. Then he did it again. And again. And again--for eight years straight. Pancho goes beyond the trophies and tantrums to explore the man behind the myth. Through dozens of interviews with Pancho, Castro investigates the cycles of rage and alienation that followed Gonzales throughout his life and examines his legacy--as a pathbreaker, a Chicano icon before the term existed, and a painful reminder of what happens when greatness collides with a country that insists on respectability over revolution.
