THE PERFECT EMPLOYEE

Fresh out of college, drowning in student debt and running out of options, she takes a front desk job at a luxury Boston hotel. It is supposed to be temporary: name tags, impossible guests, and a paycheck that keeps the lights on while she waits for her real career to begin. Then the earpieces arrive. A company-sponsored Behavioral Research Program starts offering employees thousands of dollars to take part in private "wellness" assessments. The money is real. The sessions are voluntary. And the coworkers who come back seem calmer, sharper, more efficient. Almost perfect. They also seem less like themselves. The sarcastic coworker who once laughed at everything stops laughing. People remember what used to make them angry, what they loved, who they cared about—but the feelings themselves no longer seem to fit. She starts noticing things that don't add up: restricted rooms, strange employee records, and a system that appears to know far more about its staff than any workplace should. Then she finds her own profile. HIGH VALUE. Whatever the hotel has been measuring, she is no longer just watching it happen to other people. And when a company starts treating personality like a performance metric, keeping your job may be the least of what you stand to lose. A psychological workplace thriller about debt, identity, corporate control, and the terror of becoming the perfect employee.
