Compositore inglese. Figlio di musicisti, iniziò presto a comporre canzoni con la collaborazione di Tim Rice per i testi, e nel 1971 ottenne un inatteso successo mondiale con l'opera rock Jesus Christ Superstar. La formula, basata su un'abile commistione di elementi moderni e classici, di musica pop e drammaturgia d'effetto, in una zona di confine tra stili e generi diversi, venne perfezionata in lavori successivi, come l'opera Evita (basata sulla biografia di Eva Perón, 1978) e i musicals Cats (su testi di T.S. Eliot, 1981), The Phantom of the Opera (1986) e Aspects of Love (1989), che gli hanno assicurato una popolarità paragonabile soltanto a quella raggiunta dagli spettacoli di Gilbert e Sullivan nel secolo scorso.
