The Phantom 'Rickshaw, and Other Ghost Stories
Ghost stories out of British India - the rickshaw that follows a man who jilted its owner, the dak-bungalow where the dead play billiards at night, the sand-pit from which no one climbs out - with The Man Who Would Be King beside them. Kipling wrote most of these in his early twenties as a newspaperman in India, and the heat and the boredom in them are first-hand. Fifty plates of painting from 1800 to 1912, among them Goya and Böcklin, carry the same haunted Indian ground, from the Residency at Lucknow to a ghostly vision.
