Dopo la censura che toccò alla ballad opera "Polly" di Pepusch, composta sul libretto di John Gay come conseguenza della fortunata Opera da tre soldi, 15 anni dopo, nel 1777, con un libretto rivisto, quest’opera contribuì notevolmente a fissare Samuel Arnold tra i preminenti compositori del teatro musicale a Londra.

Nel 1999 Kevin Mallon ha fondato l’Aradia Ensemble, formazione con cui ha compiuto numerose tournée in ogni parte del mondo, ed è stato scelto come direttore principale della Toronto Chamber Orchestra. Mallon ha realizzato per la Naxos oltre 50 dischi.

Samuel Arnold

1740, Londra

Compositore e musicologo inglese. Organista della cappella reale e dell'abbazia di Westminster, compose una cinquantina di lavori teatrali, in gran parte di genere leggero e comico, che vennero accolti con grande favore dal pubblico londinese. Curò un'edizione delle opere di Händel, che lasciò interrotta al 36º volume. Pubblicò anche un'antologia in 4 volumi di musica sacra inglese dei secc. xvii e xviii intitolata Cathedral Music (1790), con l'intenzione di continuare l'omonima antologia di W. Boyce.
