The Power Hunger
For most of the last two decades, the American electricity business was a patient, slightly sleepy enterprise. Then a new kind of customer arrived at the utility's door: the AI data center, asking not for a little more power but for as much as a mid-sized city, and asking now. The Power Hunger is an on-the-ground account of the collision between artificial intelligence and the old, carefully regulated grid that was never built for this kind of demand. William Liu starts in the part of Virginia that became the world's data center capital, where one utility alone has fielded data center requests adding up to tens of gigawatts of promised load. He follows the money as utilities commit to build gas turbines and revive shuttered nuclear plants to meet it, and follows the physics as engineers try to keep a grid balanced in real time when its biggest customers can spike their draw in seconds. He goes inside the fights over who actually pays for all this new infrastructure, and finds that so far, a disproportionate share has landed on ordinary households, not through conspiracy but through the ordinary machinery of utility rate cases. The book does not take the easy position that AI is either an unstoppable miracle or an unaffordable boondoggle. It tracks the auctions, the forecasts that keep sliding, the small towns living next to new gas plants, and the tech companies signing power deals that read more like sovereign energy policy than corporate procurement. Every figure is sourced to a public filing, a federal statistical agency, or a named company disclosure. The Power Hunger is for readers who have heard that AI is straining the electric grid and want to understand exactly how, who is paying for it, and who gets to decide.
