Compositore inglese. Pur subendo le influenze dapprima di Stravinskij, poi di Messiaen e di Cage, è approdato presto a uno stile personale intonato a un sentimento mistico e trascendente. La sua produzione comprende pertanto lavori strumentali da camera e un concerto per pianoforte e orchestra (1963), ma soprattutto composizioni vocali, sia per voci soliste, sia per coro, soli e strumenti (fra quest'ultime si ricordano: il Celtic Requiem, 1969; Ultimos ritos, 1972; il Requiem for Father Malachy, 1973; Ikon of Light per doppio coro e trio d'archi, 1984; la cantata We shall see Him as He is per soli, coro e orchestra, 1990; Melina per voce sola, 1994); inoltre, The Repentant Thief per clarinetto e orchestra (1990). Ha composto anche opere drammatiche, fra cui Thérèse (1976), A gentle spirit...
