Pick up a phone and press the volume button. The click you hear comes from a small magnet made of neodymium, one of seventeen metallic elements known, misleadingly, as the rare earths. In the spring of 2025, car plants on three continents slowed or stopped because that same supply chain seized up. The Rare Earth Squeeze is the story of the minerals behind modern life, and the decades-long choices that put most of the world's processing capacity for them in one country. William Liu starts with the chemistry that makes rare earths hard to work with despite not being especially rare, then traces how Chinese industrial policy built a commanding position in mining and, especially, refining over several decades while Western governments treated the industry as a commercial matter rather than a strategic one. He follows the magnet from a phone speaker to a car motor to a fighter jet, into the boom-and-bust history of Mountain Pass, the only major rare earth mine in the United States, and into the tense diplomacy of a 2025 trade dispute that briefly halted car production worldwide over a mineral few people can name. The second half of the book turns to the response: a Washington that has taken an equity stake in a mining company, allies stockpiling supplies and expanding their own processing, and engineers looking for ways to build motors and turbines with less reliance on the hardest-to-source elements. Liu is careful not to promise a tidy ending. There is no date by which the dependence ends, only a supply chain that may end up with more than one path through its hardest bottlenecks. Every figure in this book comes from a named source: the U.S. Geological Survey, the International Energy Agency, court filings, and company disclosures. The Rare Earth Squeeze is for readers who want to understand the material basis of modern technology, and the geopolitics now built on top of it.
