The Roman Empire: 20 Must-Read Books assembles a capacious archive of Roman power, civic life, warfare, moral reflection, and historical memory. Moving between annalistic history, military narrative, biography, political commentary, philosophy, and later scholarly synthesis, the volume traces Rome from republican expansion through imperial consolidation and decline. Accounts of conquest, imperial character, and the tensions between liberty and autocracy stand beside meditations on ethical self-rule, making the collection both a record of institutions and an inquiry into the human costs of dominion. Its contributors span antiquity and modern historiography. Classical witnesses—including statesmen, soldiers, senators, biographers, and an emperor—preserve competing perspectives on authority, campaign, spectacle, and public virtue. Their works are complemented by influential nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historians and educators whose interpretive frameworks helped shape modern understanding of Rome. Together, these voices place the collection in dialogue with Roman historiographical tradition, Enlightenment reflection on decline, and the development of professional historical scholarship. Recommended for students, general readers, and devoted classicists alike, this volume offers an exceptional opportunity to compare primary testimony with later interpretation. Its breadth encourages readers to assess how Rome was narrated, judged, idealized, and contested across centuries, while its diverse forms foster a rich conversation about empire, citizenship, leadership, and historical method. The collection's breadth of insights invites readers into a dynamic dialogue between the ancient and the modern, making it an indispensable volume for any literary collection focused on historical scholarship and cultural heritage.

Edward Gibbon

(Putney, Londra, 1737 - Londra 1794) storico inglese.
