Brittania, AD 403 Marcus Cassius has left Rome for a new life and settles in Britannia on the island of Vectis. A Roman Smile chronicles his world, too often action-packed beyond his imaginings. We meet his spirited young daughter Fannia, an alluring neighbour Melania Lupurka, a corrupt government official Marcellus Fronto, the future son-in-law Aquilinus Drusus; and other entertaining and sinister characters. Rough sea crossings, dangerous Roman roads, marauding bands of ex-slaves, a Londinium filled with perils at every turn; Gilly evokes the style of life for those living in Britannia at the beginning of the fifth century AD. Originally from Kent, former dancer and now prolific writer Gilly confesses to being passionately inquisitive about the peoples of Ancient Greece and Rome stimulated by her classical studies - and a certain Roman Villa.
