Propr. Eleonora, detta «Lady Day». Cantante statunitense di jazz. La sua è considerata la più alta espressione vocale della musica nero-americana, per il timbro intenso e struggente, fattosi più scarno e drammatico negli ultimi anni. Impregnato di blues, il suo canto è a volte simile al «sound» di un sassofono, in particolare affine a quello di Lester Young (con cui collaborò spesso). Le prime incisioni sono nel 1935 con l'orchestra di Benny Goodman; poi, fino al '39, cantò con il gruppo del pianista Teddy Wilson e in seguito con importanti jazzisti radunati per lei dall'impresario Norman Granz.
