The Second Shadow
The Second Shadow At the Lykeion of Ampelos, every student eventually receives a second shadow—a supernatural creature shaped from the deepest truths they carry within themselves. But the school has turned those shadows into a currency, forcing students to exchange their secrets while the powerful profit from what they reveal. Eighteen-year-old Ainetos arrives at the Lykeion wearing his dead brother's coat and carrying a mystery he has kept buried for four years. Assigned the lowest place in the school and given a small, injured grey cat as his second shadow, he quickly becomes an object of ridicule. Then he meets Alkandros of Pyrrhos, the school's brilliant and untouchable heir, whose magnificent lion is slowly wasting away. Ainetos is the first person to see what everyone else has chosen to ignore. As the two are forced into a year-long ritual of exchanging secrets, an unexpected bond begins to form between them. But beneath the school's ancient traditions lies something far more sinister. The Lykeion has been exploiting its students' secrets for generations, and Ainetos discovers that his brother's death may be connected to the institution itself. When he finds evidence of a forbidden door beneath the school—and hears the breathing of a mysterious hound trapped behind it—Ainetos realizes that the truth has been deliberately erased. To uncover what happened to his brother, he must challenge the school that feeds him, protects him, and owns his place within it. But the closer Ainetos and Alkandros become, the more dangerous their secrets become—and the more they risk losing. The Second Shadow is a dark, atmospheric fantasy about grief, truth, forbidden knowledge, power, and the dangerous intimacy of being truly seen by another person.
