Seven

Moses had five words. His sister was dying and he did not compose anything. El na refa na la. God, please, heal her, please. Five words, the shortest prayer in the Torah, and after three thousand years still the most urgent thing anyone has said to God about someone they love. SEVEN opens seven ancient Hebrew prayers that most Christians have never been shown. Not the familiar ones. The deep ones. The priestly blessing, found in 1979 engraved on two tiny silver scrolls in a Jerusalem tomb, written around 600 BCE and still the oldest biblical text ever recovered from the ground. The forty-two words of the Ana B'Koach, whose opening letters are said to spell a Name of God so weighty that the Talmud restricts it to a person who is humble, sober, and slow to anger. The prayer the High Priest spoke on Yom Kippur, once a year, asking not for the transformation of the cosmos but for grain and wine and oil and dew.
