For fans of Rachel Rhys' The Dangerous Crossing and Victoria Hislops's Cartes Postales from Greece, NOW AT THIS SPECIAL EBOOK PRICE It was in the shadow hours of deepest night that this tapestry of lies fell to rags . . . Harriet Jenner is just twenty-one when she walks through the gates of Fenix House. Reeling from a personal tragedy, she doesn't expect her new life as a governess to be easy. A beautiful told story going backwards to the 1870s and forwards to the 1920s. Harriet is left penniless and bereft after her father's death and travels to Fenix House in the Cotswolds to become a governess to the daughters of the wealthy Pembridge family. Harriet finds herself involved with family secrets, a murder, and is forced to flee Fenix House traumatised, pregnant, and alone again. Grace, her granddaughter whom Harriet has raised after the death of her parents in a train crash in 1910, is persuaded by Harriet to apply for a position as governess and nurse to the same family she has heard stories about since childhood. As she begins to forge relationships with the Pembridges, Grace slowly discovers that she too is tied to Fenix House. Alternating between two time periods this novel progresses slowly in the beginning and then rattles on at a great pace which makes you want to keep reading long into the night. The story builds up dramatically. This was the first book I have read by this author and I shall look forward to reading more of her books. Beautifully written, highly recommended. Jean
