She Exists

Archivist Nora Vass arrives to document the estate of a man who died alone on a sinking island; she braced herself for the usual melancholy of an unremembered existence. What she discovers makes her freeze in her tracks. For thirty years, Thomas Lear poured his heart into a novel about a woman he'd only imagined. He built her a library, filled with the scent of old paper and polished wood. He stored away the recollections of her hands, like precious keepsakes. He described, with quiet and devastating precision, a pale, thin line that marred the skin on her left wrist. Nora has that scar. Nora and Thomas had never met. His understanding was beyond reason, and asking him was impossible since Thomas had died in January, four days prior to the ferry's arrival. She Exists is a love story that unfolds with a gentle, unhurried pace, leaving a deep and touching impression. It asks what it means to be known by someone before you've met. Love, does it need someone there, or is the accurate and unwavering form of attentiveness enough? Could a woman whose life has been defined by measurement finally find peace in simply existing? Consider this a tribute to every reader who has experienced that profound recognition from a stranger, and to every woman who has arrived somewhere and been struck by the sudden, absolute knowledge that she was home.
