Nel 1871 fu mandato in Inghilterra, a Southsea, presso una parente anziana: vi passò anni di solitudine e di infelicità, dai quali prenderà più tardi spunto per un celebre racconto, Bee bee, pecora nera (Baa, baa, black sheep, in Wee Willie Winkie..., 1888). Nel 1878 K. entrò nello United Service College di Westward Ho, Devonshire, che K. descriverà nei realistici racconti di Stalky e Soci (Stalky & Co., 1899).
