Too Late
Victor Vart Jr. has inherited his grandfather’s house. Now he has to decide what to do with everything inside it. There are boxes of documents, old photographs, architectural plans, things nobody wanted to throw away and things nobody bothered to explain. Most of it means very little to Victor. Then he finds Zita’s journals. He begins reading because he wants to understand his grandfather. The Victor Vart he remembers was a successful architect, a wealthy man, and a complicated father and grandfather. But the man in Zita’s journals is someone else entirely. He is twenty-two years old. He has just finished university. He counts every coin he spends. He wears his shoes until they can no longer be repaired. He and Zita live in a tiny attic apartment where the window leaks when it rains. They don’t have much. But they have each other. And for a while, that seems to be enough. Victor Jr. keeps reading. He sees SanaZit before it became the company that changed the family’s fortunes. He sees his grandparents trying to raise a child while building careers of their own. He sees the arguments that were forgotten, the decisions that seemed unimportant at the time, and the small compromises nobody could have known would matter years later. And slowly, the grandfather Victor thought he understood becomes harder to judge. Because there was no single moment when everything went wrong. There was work. There was money. There was ambition. There was a bridge in Ingolstadt that was supposed to take a few months. There was a wife who kept waiting for her husband to come home. And eventually, there was a little boy who stopped asking when his father would be back. Victor Jr. already knows how the story ends. What he doesn’t know is how they got there. As he works his way through the house and the life his grandparents left behind, he begins to understand things his father never knew, things his grandmother never said, and things he never had the chance to ask his grandfather. Some of those answers make the past easier to understand. Others make it worse. Because understanding why someone hurt the people they loved doesn’t undo what they did. And sometimes, by the time you finally know what you needed to know, the person you wanted to ask is gone. Too Late is the fourth and final volume of the VART series, bringing together the story of three generations of one family and the choices that shaped them. For readers who enjoy Dennis Lehane’s morally complicated characters, Jonathan Franzen’s deeply flawed families, and Celeste Ng’s stories about the secrets and misunderstandings that can pass from parents to children. The VART series spans more than eighty years, following one family through love, ambition, resentment, loyalty, crime, success, failure, and the consequences that survive long after the people who caused them are gone. Four books. Three generations. One family. And one last chance to understand how they became who they are. Too Late is Volume IV and the final novel in the VART series.
