Scrittore inglese di origine norvegese. Lavorò in Africa e fu pilota della RAF durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Si trasferì poi negli Stati Uniti dove scrisse racconti, romanzi e libri per ragazzi di grande successo internazionale. Adottò il punto di vista dei più giovani in storie percorse da una forte vena di humour nero, spesso animate da scenari macabri e grotteschi: Gli Sporcelli (The Twits, 1980), La fabbrica di cioccolato (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 1964), il suo seguito Il grande ascensore di cristallo (Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, 1973), Il GGG (The BFG, 1982), il grande gigante gentile.
