Guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli hold unique places in the history of jazz music. As the mainstays of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, they are the first European musicians to directly influence what was until their heyday, a totally American-based genre. The pair could hardly have been more different, yet it was this contrast that apparently fired up their partnership. Even though they collaborated with many famous figures, their work with the Quintet of the Hot Club of France remains the most celebrated of their careers. Propr. Jean-Baptiste Reinhardt. Chitarrista belga di origine tzigana. Originalissimo solista di jazz, realizzò una perfetta fusione del linguaggio musicale tzigano con quello dello Swing, inventando una nuova tecnica per lo strumento, impostagli dalla semiparalisi di una mano riportata in seguito a un incendio, nel 1948, nella carovana della sua famiglia. La sua fama è legata alle incisioni, a partire dal 1934, con il Quintette du Hot Club de France formato con il violinista Stéphane Grappelli. Incise in Europa con musicisti americani (Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Dicky Wells) e suonò nel 1946, negli Stati Uniti, con l'orchestra di Duke Ellington. Nel dopoguerra fu in parte influenzato dal bop. Anche suo figlio babik (Parigi 1944) è chitarrista vicino ai moduli del jazz.
