Undersubscribed

In 2024, an Alabama college that had stood for 168 years voted to close. An Illinois college never reopened. A small New York town learned it would lose a quarter of its volunteer firefighters when its college shut down. None of these schools failed because of scandal or a single bad decision. They failed because of arithmetic that was set in motion eighteen years earlier, when American births began to fall. Undersubscribed explains the demographic cliff now reaching American higher education and what it means for colleges, faculty, students and the towns built around them. William Liu follows the closure lists, the discount rate that is quietly hollowing out tuition revenue, the mergers and teach-outs, the bind facing regional public universities, the community college paradox, the HBCU exception, and the athletics trap that drains budgets. He shows why selectivity keeps rising at the very top while the middle empties out, and why a second cliff may be coming behind the first. Grounded in published data and written for parents, students, trustees, faculty and anyone who wants to understand why campuses are going quiet, this is a clear, unsentimental look at what comes after the cliff.
