Some things survive because they were preserved. Others survive because someone refused to let them disappear. Clara Vale has built her career restoring paintings without imposing herself upon them. As a respected conservator, she believes in evidence, restraint and the ethics of knowing when not to intervene. A damaged canvas can be stabilised. A false surface can be removed. But every act of restoration risks becoming an act of interpretation—and Clara has learned to distrust anyone who is too certain they know what the past was meant to say. Then she is asked to examine an apparently unremarkable landscape hanging at Ashcombe. Beneath the painted river lies something no catalogue records: an unfinished 1913 portrait of Celia Harcourt, a young woman whose image appears to have been deliberately concealed beneath another work. The discovery immediately raises questions that no technical report can answer. Why was the portrait covered? Who made that decision? And does uncovering the truth honour the woman in the painting—or expose a private history she was never able to control? Nathaniel Hart has inherited more than Ashcombe's paintings. He has inherited a family archive full of gaps, careful silences and generations of people who learned how to survive by deciding which truths could safely be remembered. Clara expects him to defend the family reputation. Instead, Nathaniel is prepared to question almost everything he has been taught about his own history. Almost everything. As Clara and Nathaniel work through conservation reports, letters, altered records and the physical evidence hidden beneath the painting, another woman begins to emerge from the archive: Evelyn Wren, Celia's companion, whose place in the Harcourt story has been reduced to footnotes and implication. The closer Clara comes to revealing the portrait, the less certain she becomes that revelation is automatically justice. And the closer Nathaniel comes to Clara, the harder it becomes to pretend that professional curiosity is the only reason he keeps finding excuses to remain beside her worktable. Their attraction develops slowly—through shared concentration, ethical disagreement, dry humour, late evenings in the conservation studio and the quiet intimacy of being trusted with something fragile. But Clara knows better than most that uncovering a hidden layer changes the object forever. When the treatment reaches a critical point, the decision about what should be revealed becomes inseparable from questions neither of them can keep at professional distance: who owns a private history, what families owe the dead, and whether love can survive when truth and protection no longer mean the same thing. The Unfinished Portrait is an intelligent, emotionally intimate contemporary romance about restoration, inheritance, hidden histories and the complicated ethics of bringing the past back into the light. The first novel in The Restoration Society, a series of interconnected standalones about people who restore objects that have lost their original meaning—and discover that not everything broken should be returned to what it was.
