The Waiting Room

Riverside Urgent Care never closes — and the waiting room is always, impossibly, full. Some of the regulars have been in those chairs since the Clinton administration, and none of them seem to mind nearly as much as they should. Paramedic Dana Okafor has wheeled patients through those doors a thousand times without wondering why. Then one ordinary Tuesday night, off the clock and for reasons she can't quite explain, she sits down. Three chairs over, a man is filling in the same crossword he's already finished four hundred times. Behind the desk, receptionist Marguerite Voss runs the tightest, kindest, most terrifying front desk in the tri-county area — and it doesn't take Dana long to work out how she keeps the line moving. There's a ledger. There's a form nobody reads. And there's a price, quietly, generously, irreversibly deducted from the rest of your life. When the debt comes due on someone Dana loves, she doesn't have the luxury of not asking questions anymore. Neither, it turns out, do thirty-one years' worth of regulars who've been waiting for exactly this moment to finally read the fine print out loud. A cheesy, self-aware horror-comedy about bureaucracy, mortality, and what we'll sign away without reading — for anyone who's ever eyed their own doctor's receptionist a little too closely.
