Giornalista culturale di lungo corso, è stato caporedattore della 'London Review of Books' ed è fra i collaboratori fissi del 'New Yorker'.Ha al suo attivo i romanzi, "Gola" (1996), "L'uomo che sognava altre donne" (2000), "Il porto degli aromi" (2004), pubblicati in Italia da Longanesi/Guanda e "Pepsy Road" edito da Mondadori nel 2013. Nel 2020 esce per Sellerio Il muro.
