Matthew Thomas è nato nel Bronx, a New York, e cresciuto nel Queens. Laureato alla University of Chicago, ha un Master of Fine Arts in scrittura presso la John Hopkins University e un Master of Fine Arts presso la University of California, da cui è stato premiato con il Graduate Essay Award. Vive con la moglie e i figli in New Jersey.
