We Call Donuts “Breakfast.”

Leonard Vale is thirty-nine, works in compliance, eats too much turkey, and has never seriously questioned why donuts count as breakfast. Then one Monday morning, he does. That tiny realization cracks something open. Soon Leonard begins noticing the strange agreements that hold everyday life together: office rituals nobody believes in, rules everyone follows without remembering why, polite phrases that mean almost nothing, jobs that somehow become identities, and the quiet assumption that someone, somewhere, must understand what all of this is for. Then his boss dies. And comes back to work. From there, things get worse. Phones begin ringing from nowhere. Dead relatives leave messages. A conference room becomes larger on the inside. Human Resources has apparently seen the void. Tuesday refuses to end. A printer starts issuing resignation letters, performance reviews, and existential invoices. An emergency exit opens into other versions of life. God is, regrettably, out of office. And through it all, Leonard keeps going to work. Part philosophical comedy, part surreal workplace satire, and part deeply human meditation on mortality, meaning, love, regret, and the absurdity of modern life, We Call Donuts "Breakfast." asks a deceptively simple question: What if life never explains itself? Maybe the answer is not despair. Maybe meaning does not have to be discovered like buried treasure. Maybe it can be built—imperfectly, temporarily, together. And maybe the universe does not owe us a grand finale. Sometimes there is only cake in the break room, a meeting that could have been an email, someone you love calling at the right time, and one more ordinary morning in which you choose to continue anyway.
