What Intelligence Cannot Measure
Artificial intelligence can now write, reason, persuade, recognize patterns, generate images, assist in scientific discovery, and perform tasks once considered evidence of uniquely human intelligence. As those capabilities continue to expand, an unsettling question becomes harder to avoid: If machines can reproduce more of what we do, what remains distinctive about being human? What Intelligence Cannot Measure examines that question at the boundary of artificial intelligence, philosophy, cognitive science, ethics, law, and faith. Rather than asking only how intelligent machines may become, Dr. Zeeshan H. Khan asks what their development reveals about the assumptions we have made about intelligence, consciousness, responsibility, authority, and human worth. Drawing on contemporary AI research and interdisciplinary scholarship, the book follows a progression from capability to reliability, trust, authority, and responsibility. It examines what happens when increasingly capable systems enter domains in which measurement and performance are important but insufficient to settle questions of meaning, moral accountability, or human value. The inquiry ultimately reaches a boundary that technological progress alone cannot resolve. From a theological perspective, the book considers questions about the soul, human nature, and the limits of human knowledge, while carefully distinguishing theological claims from scientific and philosophical ones. This is neither an argument against artificial intelligence nor an attempt to diminish its extraordinary capabilities. It is an investigation of what those capabilities can teach us about ourselves, and why a world increasingly able to measure intelligence must still confront the question of what intelligence cannot measure.
