What We Carry: Awakening from the Patterns We Inherit is a deeply personal exploration of how childhood experiences can become subconscious beliefs about love, safety, worth, conflict, and belonging—and quietly influence the relationships, choices, and lives we create. Growing up in a home shaped by alcoholism, unpredictability, love, fear, and forgiveness, the author learned to read the emotional climate around him before he understood why. He didn’t know he was adapting. He thought he was simply growing up. Those adaptations followed him into adulthood. Through athletics, relationships, marriage, addiction within the family, betrayal, divorce, fatherhood, counseling, business success, failure, forgiveness, and self-discovery, familiar patterns continued to resurface. For years, these experiences seemed like separate chapters. Eventually, he realized they were pieces of the same puzzle. Childhood experiences had become beliefs. Beliefs had become patterns. Patterns had become behaviors. Repeated long enough, those behaviors had begun to feel like identity. Blending memoir with insights into childhood conditioning, relationships, subconscious beliefs, and the nervous system, What We Carry asks whether traits such as people-pleasing, anger, withdrawal, perfectionism, control, hyper-independence, and fear of abandonment may once have developed as forms of protection. This is not a story about blaming parents, circumstances, or the past. It is about understanding the difference between fault and responsibility—and discovering the freedom that awareness can bring. We may not get to choose what was handed to us as children. But we can choose what we continue to carry and what we hand to those who come after us. The patterns we inherit do not have to become the legacy we leave behind.
