Where the Fish Always Wait

From the trout streams of a Northumberland childhood to the spawning rivers of rural Vietnam, this is a life measured not in miles, but in waters watched, tides learned, and fish remembered. Raymond Findlay's journey begins on a farm where a boy first discovers a river full of wild trout, guided by quiet lessons from the land, the old fishermen who taught him, and a father who knew how to stand beside him. Those early moments grow into a lifelong passion: chasing salmon on the Tyne and Tweed, winter beach fishing off the northeast coast, winning a national sea angling title, and casting lines across the warm seas of the UAE, Qatar, Thailand and finally, Vietnam. Retiring far from home, he finds familiar wonder in an unfamiliar land: the same ancient cycle of spawning fish he saw as a child reappearing halfway across the world, connecting every chapter of his life. He shares the catch, respects the water, and learns that no matter where you go home is something you carry in your heart while building it anew. Honest, gentle, and unpolished in the best way, these memoirs speak to anyone who has left one shore for another, who has waited by the water and wondered, and who knows the fish don't care about borders they just keep swimming, and waiting, for us to notice.
