Mr. Rattigan has given a mild wartime slant to his play. One the eve of his marriage, the young and wealthy Earl of Harpenden puts up an American Lieutenant for the night; and in the morning dates him up with a former girl friend. The American mistakes the earl's finance for the girl friend, and the two of them fall in love with each other before he discovers his mistake. What with a French officer also in the race, the girl friend very much in evidence, and the fiancee's father, a deadbeat duke, adding to the complications, an evening of hilarious fun is the result.-2 women, 5 men

Terence Rattigan

(Londra 1911 - Hamilton, Bermude, 1977) commediografo inglese. Scrisse molte commedie brillanti, caratterizzate da eccezionale brio e acute osservazioni di costume che gli conquistarono il favore di un vasto pubblico, sia in Inghilterra, sia negli USA (Il francese senza lacrime, French without tears, 1937, nt; Il principe e la ballerina, The prince and the showgirl, 1957, nt). Oggi la critica tende a preferire la sua produzione drammatica «seria», dove utilizza tutte le sue qualità di grande artigiano: tra esse Il cadetto Winslow (The Winslow boy, 1946), Tavole separate (Separate tables, 1955, nt), Ross (1960), sulla vita di Lawrence d’Arabia. L’ultimo lavoro di R. è una commedia di costume sulla vita amorosa di Nelson, Lascito alla nazione (A bequest to the nation, postuma, 1978, nt).
