In recent years, life has improved significantly in material terms for many, particularly in the Western world. The global financial crisis has applied a brake to this trend, with the exception of a small minority who continue to receive obscene incomes and accumulate vast wealth. But the crisis is just one symptom of a wider malaise. During the period of prosperity, we have been disrupting the climate and ruining the environment; billions have remained in poverty; tens of thousands of children die unnecessarily each day; our young men and women have been fighting in foreign lands; and human rights abuses have continued.
