The World of the Lanterns The world of Wren and the Deep is a hopeful future rebuilt after the "Quiet Year," when the old computers broke. Most of the world's seas and stations are looked after by the Lantern League. Lanterns are minds grown slowly in shells. They are not built, and each one is bonded to a human partner for life. Partners wear a Lens, a thin silver curve behind the ear, which lets them share words and feelings mind to mind. Lanterns are linked by the Chorus, a web of cables across the seafloor. In each station's small Quietroom, lit by a silver line of "mothlight," Lanterns can share their dreams. The book is full of real ocean and polar science, explained the way a curious mind would want it: Marine snow: tiny bits of life drifting down from the sunlit surface to feed the deep sea, "like letters." The Ross Ice Shelf: floating ice "the size of France" that rises and settles with every tide. Upwelling: cold, food-rich water rising up a coast, feeding plankton, then sardines, then bigger fish, then people. Electricity-passing microbes: living mats on the seafloor that pass tiny sparks from cell to cell along threads like wires. The southern lights: the aurora australis. Green comes from oxygen and pink from nitrogen, or as Sefa puts it, "the sun crashing into the sky." Bioluminescence: tiny animals that flash blue when bumped, "Excuse me, I'm here." Heat and the body: why a diamond plate lets the cold through fast, why bare hands lose warmth, and why a compass needle dips near the South Pole. About the Story Wren and the Deep is a hopeful middle-grade science-fiction adventure about friendship, listening, and the courage it takes to ask first and wait for the answer. The story opens in Lumen Bay, a town of pale stone terraces grown out of the sea, where thirteen-year-old Ines is an apprentice reef-gardener. Four mornings a week she swims out with her Aunt Ruth to plant baby corals. On the day the water suddenly turns cold, she breaks one of Aunt Ruth's rules and seeds a terrace anyway, because the odds looked good. She loses the last of the precious "Grandmother" coral babies. It's a small, painful lesson about rushing, and it echoes through the whole book. That same night, a message arrives from the Lantern League: the entire sensor network under the Ross Ice Shelf has gone silent and come back carrying a signal nobody can explain. Ines and Wren are asked to join a deep research team. After a meeting at the Glasshouse in Reykjavík and a twenty-three-hour flight under the southern lights, they ride an elevator down to Halcyon Station. Waiting at the bottom are a lemon tree, a cheerful station chief, and a crab-shaped Lantern that logs everyone's shoe size. What follows is part mystery, part deep-sea expedition and part story of growing up. Ines walks the seafloor in an armored hardshell suit and faces her worst fear when her helmet light goes out. Wren follows the rings under the ice and nearly loses itself inside something far bigger than any Lantern. And clue by clue, Ines and Sefa piece together a mystery that reaches all the way from the Antarctic mud to a flooded room off the coast of Oman, where Ines's brother Dami was lost six years before. What Ines and her friends try next is daring and tender, and very, very slow. It asks every character, human and Lantern, to learn the hardest skill of all: to wait.
