The origins of piracy in the Caribbean can be traced back to the European colonial expansion. As European powers such as Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands began to establish colonies in the New World, the lucrative trade in goods such as gold, silver, tobacco, and sugar became a prime target for pirates.
