The Audit
Halia Brennan-Park is a senior auditor at a Big Four accounting firm, methodical and meticulous, arriving at 7:30 AM every morning to watch the light angle across the printer in a glass-walled data room on the eighteenth floor of MeridianHealth's Seaport headquarters. For three weeks in October, she moves through a routine audit engagement with the regularity of someone who has done this work for years, testing revenue transactions against contracts, invoices, and delivery confirmations. Then she finds invoice 24-9117: dated June 28, amount 47 million dollars, customer a P.O. Box in Las Vegas, description four words long. Platform integration services rendered. Over nine weeks of quiet research and escalating pressure, Halia builds the case for what turns out to be a 1.8 billion dollar revenue-recognition fraud. When her engagement partner refuses to escalate the memorandum she has written, she decides to escalate it herself, setting in motion a path through the National Office, OSHA, the PCAOB, and ultimately the SEC. A novel about the thousands of career accountants who work inside audit firms and finance departments and who, on a given Tuesday, decide what to put on the issues list and what to leave off. When those decisions go one way, the system works. When they go another way, the system fails. The difference between the two is a person.
