It's a rainy October in London, and it's been a year since Inspector Gabriel Bright's last major case landed in the papers. Since then, he's been enjoying time with his family and friends as well as taking low-intensity clients, but he misses the challenge of murder. When an odd string of killings vexes Bow Street and grabs headlines, he is summoned to Whitehall to lend a hand, especially since someone is trying to off his oldest son, Henry. Though life is busy these days managing a house, wrangling two young children, and helping her husband on cases, Mary Bright is content but not excited. Though attentions from her husband are as lovely as they've ever been, there hasn't been much thrill in the private investigation corner, until the night when her son-by-marriage breaks into their house with a fantastical story of being tracked by a killer. To make matters worse, through a bizarre twist, a would-be suitor of her niece is connected to the case that has London society talking. Each step the deductive pair takes leads them farther from the truth. Pressure from Bow Street keeps tensions high and worry about their family drives a wedge between Mary and Bright. As fear holds London in its grip and danger stalks the crime-solving duo from every direction, their relationship starts to splinter. It will take more than clues and questions to find the murderer, and unless they pay close attention to their troubled romance, everything they hold dear will crumble. Far too much hangs in the balance and giving up is not an option.
