Scrittore, insegna scrittura creativa alla University of San Francisco.L'adolescenza di Vann è segnata dal suicidio del padre.I suoi libri hanno vinto sino ad oggi 14 premi, fra i quali il Prix Médicis étranger 2010 in Francia come miglior romanzo straniero (Sukkwan Island) e il Premi Llibreter 2011 in Spagna. Sono apparsi su più di 65 liste "Miglior libro dell'anno" in dodici Paesi, e sono stati tradotti in 18 lingue. Vann è stato insignito del Guggenheim Fellowship per le arti creative, nella categoria fiction.
