Joseph Heller è stato uno scrittore statunitense. Bombardiere dell’aviazione americana in Corsica durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ha ottenuto un successo vasto e immediato con il primo, poderoso romanzo, Comma 22 (Catch 22, 1961), cui è seguita la commedia Bombardammo New Haven (We bombed New Haven, 1968, nt). Per H. la guerra aerea, contemplata a distanza e rievocata con i moduli dell’assurdo e dell’umorismo nero, si trasforma in occasione simbolica e in condizione tragicomica; il militarismo, degenerazione folle della burocrazia, è presentato come una forma semplificata della feroce indifferenza contemporanea alla sorte del singolo. Vittime di un «comma» illeggibile, Yossarian, l’antieroe del romanzo di H., e i suoi compagni lottano...
