1920, Kansas City

Propr. Christopher Charles Parker soprannominato «Bird». Altosassofonista statunitense di jazz. Esordì a Kansas City nell'orchestra di Jay McShann, con cui incise i suoi primi assolo nel 1941; successivamente fece parte delle orchestre di Earl Hines e Billy Eckstine. All'inizio degli anni '40, al Minton's Club di New York, fu tra i protagonisti delle riunioni sperimentali del bop; qui elaborò le sue lucidissime e talvolta allucinate improvvisazioni, che presentano una complessa struttura armonica, con frequenti alterazioni degli accordi di base in frasi che alternano note brevissime e fitte a note tenute, su un ritmo dalle accentuazioni irregolari. Nonostante le vicende turbolente della sua vita – che causarono frequenti interruzioni nella carriera e non furono certo estranee alla sua precoce...
