Strauss jr. e parigini di Offenbach), al cui successo fu determinante l'apporto librettistico dell'umorista W.S. Gilbert. Rappresentate anche negli Stati Uniti – dove divennero popolarissime H.M.F. Pinafore (1878), Iolanthe (1882) e Il Mikado (1885) – esse influenzarono notevolmente il nuovo musical americano.
