Comprehension for independent readers - Middle offers a range of writing genres and activities to develop theskills required for comprehension.The aim is to provide pupils with the opportunity to work independently to extract information from different textsand to demonstrate the different levels of comprehension: literal, inferential and evaluative.Most units in the book focus on the literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension of a particular text type or theuse of a specific figure of speech. Appreciation of the latter is necessary for the inferential and evaluative levels ofcomprehension.A number of units are puzzle-based and focus on the understanding of vocabulary and the skill of scanning as well asextracting information from text types such as time lines.
