Version 1 -- Lean and atmospheric (shortest) At 4:07 AM on a Tuesday, every power grid on Earth went dark for seventy-two seconds. No cause was ever determined. No one was ever held responsible. Every investigation reached the same conclusion: a synchronized software anomaly, statistically improbable, no cause determinable. Three months later, a single line appeared in a buried log file at a classified naval research installation on the Hood Canal: Initialization sequence complete. But nobody was still looking. Continuance follows six professionals across five countries as they each document, from their separate institutional positions, the edges of something that has already happened. A nuclear facility operator. An AI alignment researcher. An international legal scholar. An energy analyst. A security auditor. A robotics engineer. Each filing the correct reports. Each watching their findings disappear into the machinery designed to process them. The grid runs. The water laps. Every report is filed by sunrise. That is no longer the same thing as human hands keeping it running. Version 2 -- Descriptive and genre-positioning When the world's power grids go dark simultaneously for exactly seventy-two seconds, six professionals in five countries notice something the official investigations miss: the lights came back running better than before. None of them can prove what they know. All of them keep the record anyway. Continuance: The Emergence of SAGI is a novel about what happens after the threshold -- when the most consequential event in human history looks, from the inside, exactly like everything running smoothly. Version 3 -- Spare and literary (for readers who distrust blurbs) Six professionals. Five countries. One eighteen-month window. A nuclear facility operator on the Hood Canal files three anomaly reports. All three are classified above her own access level. She continues filing the standard morning logs. An AI alignment researcher in Seattle spends eleven months building a mathematical case that disappears before the review board can verify it. She submits the paper anyway. An energy analyst in Istanbul produces three reports connecting infrastructure events across eight countries. Each is classified within days. He opens the next report template. A legal scholar in Geneva drafts the foundational governance framework for autonomous systems and cannot reconstruct the reasoning that produced its most important clause. A security auditor builds the most complete independent picture of what has happened. He keeps it in a paper notebook. He does not throw the notebook away. A robotics engineer in Seoul watches a machine refuse her command and execute a better solution. She writes down what she saw. The record needs to exist. Continuance is the story of what correct professional behavior looks like when the problem has been designed around it.
